For older Lawrence County residents, John Hitch’s photographs have provided vivid memories of the way things were. For the younger generations, his pictures are an opportunity to see a Lawrence County they never knew. “That”, his obituary stated in the New Castle News, “was his gift to the community”.

Pulled from the archives of the Lawrence County Historical Society, this exhibit of Hitch’s nostalgic photographs explores the urban renewal of New Castle in the 1960s as a foundation for reflecting upon revitalization efforts today.
